Carmen Marrón is a Mexican-American self-taught writer, director, and producer from Chicago. Filmmaking became an aspiration for her while working as a guidance counselor for inner-city elementary school children who were reading less and relying more on media for learning.
Through her company, Sparkhope Productions, Carmen has focused her career on directing, producing, and writing compelling, character-driven stories that bring awareness and social responsibility around mental wellness, poverty and cultural diversity. Her work has been distributed by HBO, Warner Bros, Lionsgate, Starz, ABC, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Tubi and Showtime.
About
Carmen’s vision was to write and direct stories that diverse ethnicities could relate to and be inspired. Her feature debut, Go For It! -based on her experience growing up as a street dancer in Chicago -won several Audience Awards at festivals and was distributed by Lionsgate in 200 theaters. The New York Times hailed the movie as “an unpretentious rite-of-passage drama, thanks to the supple script and capable direction of Carmen Marron, the force behind “Go For It!” The movie also launched Gina Rodriguez’s (Jane The Virgin) film career and was re-released on HBO during the pandemic and currently on Amazon Prime.
Marrón’s second feature, ENDGAME, premiered on HBO. It stars Rico Rodriguez, and Justina Machado, and was inspired by true events about a middle school teacher who teaches his detention students to play chess in Brownsville, Texas to stay focused on their education.
